Alleviating Hunger
The GRACE Hunger Walk: a Grand Rapids tradition continues...
Tens of thousands of walkers have raised more than $5.5 million dollars in thirty-three years of Hunger Walks in response to local and worldwide need.
Since its founding, The Grand Rapids Area Center for Ecumenism (GRACE) has built partnerships and collaborations among congregations, organizations and individuals while fulfilling its mission: creating a community of compassion and justice by organizing responses to human need and issues of faith. Over the years, the congregations and individuals that support us have changed; the needs and issues that call for a "faith response" have changed; the structure and programs in our organization have changed. But one defining truth has marked our journey along the way-we can accomplish far more when we work together than alone. GRACE has existed as an expression of our desire to work together to create a community of compassion and justice, and that work continues.
Strong programming has long been at the core of GRACE. In recent years, we have focused our resources on three program areas-working to alleviate hunger, house the homeless and heal racism. In keeping with our history of ensuring that that such programs continue, GRACE collaborated the 2011 Hunger Walk with Access of West Michigan. In 2012, Access will coordinate the Hunger Walk
Access was established in 1981, when GRACE convened a number of community and congregational leaders to provide a faith community response to emergency needs. Access focuses on hunger year-round and the Hunger Walk fits well into their mission. We are thrilled that the Hunger Walk-this 34 year old "faith response" to hunger that has raised over $5.5 million-can grow into the future with an old and trusted friend like Access.
